Choosing between rope and ribbon handles

Rope carries weight and reads crafted. Ribbon reads couture and does not. Here is how to decide before it becomes a returns problem.

The handle is the first thing a customer touches and the first thing that fails. Choosing between rope and ribbon is a load-bearing decision in both senses.

Cotton rope carries substantially more weight, holds its shape when the bag is empty and survives being over-filled. It is the correct answer for hotels selling bottles and ceramics, for delis, and for any bag over about 30cm wide.

Ribbon, grosgrain or satin, is lighter duty. On a small jewellery or beauty bag it is unmatched: soft, quiet and expensive-looking. On a large bag with weight in it, the ribbon will pull through the eyelet and the customer will remember the brand for the wrong reason.

The middle case is the interesting one. Where a bag is medium-sized and the contents are light, scarves, textiles, boxed candles, grosgrain at 16mm or wider with an eyelet fixing rather than a glued patch will hold up well and give you the softer look.

One practical note on colour: rope and ribbon take dye completely differently from paper. A single Pantone reference will produce three visibly different results across an uncoated bag, a braided cotton rope and a satin ribbon. Always judge from physical samples together, under the lighting your shop actually uses.
